The collection of about 60,000 volumes has been created over the years by both purchase and donations from Proprietors. As well as books, the library also holds collections of pictures, ephemera associated with Liverpool, maps and charts and an extensive array of periodicals and journals, together with the records of the Athenaeum.
The Athenaeum was founded in 1797 to provide a library and newsroom in which gentlemen could receive and share information.
The Library has a number of fascinating and historic book collections. There are also fine collections of drawings and sketches.
The Library has until recently been available only to Proprietors. However there is now a Friends of the Library scheme that allows non Proprietors access to the Library.
The Library is valuable resource for researchers. Discover how to access the Library for research for either a single request for information or personal access to the Library.
On occasion, generous individual Proprietors have paid for the re-binding and conservation of books of particular interest. Donations of libraries or individual volumes are always welcome and books taken into the collection will be acknowledged both to the donor and by the insertion of a special book-plate.
Volunteers enhance our work by adding value, support and diversity. The Athenaeum is committed to providing beneficial experience and activities for our volunteers, and where necessary, provide support, encouragement and training. Learn more about Volunteering at the Athenaeum Library.
